In June, Coach Spo — along with HEAT Vice President, Player Programs Alonzo Mourning, and Community and Corporate Liaison Tim Hardaway — traveled to Haiti to tour areas devastated by the January earthquake.

While they were there, the HEAT envoy presented a check for $25,000 to Project Medishare, a non-profit organization that provides free medical attention to the people of Haiti, to assist in their ongoing relief efforts. The donation was raised and earmarked for Project Medishare by the Miami HEAT Charitable Fund at the 13th Annual Miami HEAT Family Festival in March.

Earlier this year, the HEAT held a three-week donation drive and shipped over 300 pallets of non-perishable food, water, clothing, and medical supplies, which were donated by the South Florida community. In addition, Mourning, along with HEAT guard Dwyane Wade, formed the “Athletes Relief Fund for Haiti” (click here for video interview with Dwyane Wade on starting up the special fund), which raised $1 million from a group of professional athletes to support relief efforts.

“Spo on the Go” launches on Miami Heat website

“Spo on the Go” is a new section that just debuted on the Miami Heat website. It’s part of Coach Spo’s commitment to the NBA FIT program.

This new web feature offers fans an opportunity to learn about healthy living, while also getting an understanding of how physical fitness is important to the success of Miami HEAT players and the Miami HEAT organization.

The section will also include monthly updates with Coach Spo’s healthy meal favorites and selections along with workout tips. His first installment involves healthy breakfasts — here are two of his favorite ways to start out the day:

Scrambled Eggs and Turkey Bacon
Fresh whole scrambled eggs or egg whites, served along with oven roasted Jennie “O” Turkey Bacon
“This is a great morning breakfast to take on the go,” he says. “I love the crispy turkey bacon.”

Egg White and Broccoli Wrap
Scrambled egg whites, fresh raw broccoli and a whole wheat tortilla wrap
“This is my favorite healthy option in the morning for breakfast,” Coach Spo says.

Coach Spo joins NBA FIT Team

Coach Spo and NBA Fit celebration

Wherever he is, whatever time of year, Coach Spo finds time for fitness.

Some days, staying fit might mean a quick game-day workout in the weight room. Other days, Coach Spo goes for a run, or takes one of his favorite spinning or yoga classes. While on vacation last summer, he even tried an intense, beachside boot-camp workout that included sand sprints and plyometrics, followed by a paddleboarding session where he spotted a large eagle ray swimming below!

Coach Spo, with the support of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida, is now partnering with the NBA and NBA Cares as a member of their NBA FIT team. The FIT team is made up of NBA Family members including players, coaches, offiicials, trainers and health-related experts who serve as ambassadors and positive role models for kids and parents. As a FIT team member, Coach Spo will attend grassroot fitness events, promote valuable fitness information and continue to make good healthy life choices.

In honor of NBA FIT Week, 100 children inner-city elementary and middle schools in the Miami area pledged their fitness commitment and New Year’s Resolutions to the Miami HEAT and the NBA on Tuesday, January 5, 2010 at W South Beach. Coach Spo was on hand to encourage the children in their fitness goals. Also joining the festivities were HEAT Television Play-by-Play announcer Eric Reid, the Miami HEAT Dancers, Burnie the HEAT Mascot, and numerous community leaders.

As part of the program, Coach Spo will soon debut “Spo on the Go,” a blog that will appear on HEAT.com. The blog will provide fans with an opportunity to learn about healthy living, while also getting an understanding of how physical fitness is important to the success of Miami HEAT players and the Miami HEAT organization.

NBA FIT encourages physical activity and healthy living through products, events and programs for children and their families, while providing youngsters with an opportunity to participate, free of charge, in exciting fitness competitions. The goal of NBA FIT is to engage one million children, adults and families to pledge NBA FIT during the 2009-10 season.
